Stuff I've been doing

Updatey bits, mostly of interest to me and historical reference.
My dad decided to come up for my birthday. Dad's a great visitor, very self-sufficient. He plays with his grandkids, gets his own tea, and is generally totally self-contained. I decided that it would be nice to go out as a family with our local uncle&aunt. As it happened the MFA also had a couple exhibits I was interested in, so we went there as well.
I haven't been to the MFA since they renovated and expanded. I went to see the Michaelangelo exhibit and the kids and I wanted to see the samurai armor. We spent about two hours total in the museum and could easily have spent much more. We saw some nice Egyptian artifacts, one of their permanent Chihuly pieces, a really awesome blue and white art exhibit (http://www.mfa.org/exhibitions/new-blue-and-white), and the two exhibits we wanted to see. The Michaelangelo was a little small, but the samurai armor exhibit was bigger and more comprehensive than I expected. I like the way the MFA has improved its space, though the navigation remains a tad confusing, and their food options remain good.
Sunday there was much gaming and packing because Monday evening I flew to Houston for my first business trip of the new job. We have people there that I've talked to many times on the phone but not met.
The details of the trip are even more boring to people who don't work with me - it was a good trip, except for the part where I get to the security checkpoint and show my license to the woman who says "You know this is expired, right?"
Eep. Of course my license expires on my birthday and I could have thought of that in advance, but really who keeps track of an event that happens once every five years? It's OK, she says, as long as I'm not trying to rent a car. DOH!
Fortunately (A) by the time I got to Houston late that night the car rental agent was too busy trying to sell me insurance to notice the expiration date and (B) we live in the future where my wife can go online and renew the license for me. This generates an odd email which claims to be proof of a license renewal but they can't SAY what license it's renewing. (C) I never have to show this email to anyone nor try to explain it.
I did manage to get some decent Tex-Mex, not sleep much, and saw the new Star Trek movie, about which I shall say more once the wifey has a chance to see it.

Maybe it works for him, in which case great. But I don't know that it's really generalizable or that there are grand lessons to be drawn.
