Half my meetings today have been cancelled, so while I wait for the gaps to fill let's have some sounds. A couple of different things, a couple you'll be expecting.

https://soundcloud.com/thegoldenpony/the-sound-of-silence-the
I forget exactly what wandering took me to this remix from last year. It is, as the name says, The Golden Pony's remix of "The Sound of Silence". So if you're me get ready for a huge rush of nostalgia. It's wrapped up in modern electro-funk but very respectful of the original. I really like it.

https://soundcloud.com/nickraymondg/of-monsters-and-men-little-talks-thomas-jack-remix-free-download
I've mentioned Thomas Jack a couple times in the past. Each time he's brought gentle beats and a lighter tone to my day and this is no exception. It's his take on "Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghb6eDopW8I), toned and quieted, but still bouncy fun.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCiQ7Lm8Jag
I found this one in a DJ Steveboy mix and liked it enough to pull out and blog separately. The is The Beatangers doing "What's That Sound." The first commenter (at least as of this writing) has it mostly - the track relies on the classic Rapper's Delight and a lyrical couplet from "Stop Children What's That Sound"?" though it's the Les Rythmes Digitales version, not the original.

https://soundcloud.com/djschmolli/insomnia-rhythm-satisfaction
DJ Schmolli has been uploading some of his older mixes. This one just went up a few weeks ago, but it's from 2011 and highlights some of the great dance tracks that were popular around then. It's a little bit of a trainwreck but the source materials are great and it's fun to remember them.

https://soundcloud.com/steyoyoke/skena-waiting-in-the-wings
I remain not a huge fan of Italian nu-disco but the electronic scene there has spawned some variations I do like. This, Skena's "Waiting in the Wings" is one such. It's darker and more ethereal, taking disco beats and looping them into a driving vibrato.

https://soundcloud.com/looandplacido/tjr-vinai-x-ac-dc-x-metallica-x-lluke-diplo-loo-placido-bootleg
Here's a double shot of Loo & Placido multi-mashes in similar but different styles. The first one is a "Jump Around" moombahton mash with a number of scratch-based styles built around it. The intro is a little longer than I'd like but once it gets going it's a lot of bouncy fun.

The second one is a bounce-metal combo, which seems appropriate today since Nicky da B died this week. RIP Nicky. Twenty-four is way too soon.

Other things have consumed so many cycles I haven't had time to post music lately but I've got open tabs like whoa. This set of links will help you relax, cheer you up, or get you moving as you wish.

https://soundcloud.com/thomasjackmusic/thomas-jack-presents-tropical
First, if you also need some relaxation from the stress and angst of the days, just play this. This is Thomas Jack's "Tropical House" album and it's 90+ minutes of lovely, relaxing, jazzy, beach-inspired music. I've played this through four times since I found it a couple months ago and I'm still having a hard time picking out favorites - it's just uniformly good. There are a couple dozen artists throwing in here, and lots of them are original mixes, meaning if you like a track you can search for edits and remixes of that one, too.

https://soundcloud.com/beat-magnate/girls-just-wanna-dance
Beat Magnate brings an extended dance mix "for the ladies" by which I think he means that the track features a mix of dance hits and dance beats by female vocalists and female artists. There's no source listing, so some of the fun is in picking out who the samples are from. Well, Cindy Lauper isn't much of a challenge, but others are less obvious.

https://soundcloud.com/bootleg-mash-by-djenergy/lana-del-rey-vs-queen-and-more
I haven't liked many Lana Del Rey mash-ups, but this one manages to pull in both Queen and Rammstein and yet somehow not create a trainwreck. I think what makes it work is that most of the samples are acapella. Props to DJ Energy (http://www.last.fm/music/Dj+Energy) for that. The result is slower and much more beautiful than you'd expect.

https://soundcloud.com/dj-bred-2/mike-posner-steve-aoki-sander-van-doorn-firebeatz-cooler-feeddirty-track-bred-mashup
OK, enough with the quiet and mellow stuff. How about a high-energy dance stomper? This one is courtesy of DJ BrEd. It's built around four tracks that I'm not familiar with and sadly there's not a source list so I can't easily trace them. So just enjoy the result and if you're like me, get up and dance a bit.

https://soundcloud.com/philretrospector/moments-in-snoop
This one actually made me laugh out loud. It's a Phil RetroSpector old-style mix, using samples, Snoop bits, and Art of Noise's "Moments in Love". That latter is one of my favorite tracks and it's not something I'd heard mixed much. This isn't the most sophisticated mix and if you don't like Snoop you probably won't like this. But I needed some laughs this week and this is hilarious to me.

http://www.bootiemashup.com/top10/06-2014/Turn%20Down%20The%20Noise.mp3
Public Enemy are also among those I feel don't get enough remixes and mashes. They have such great source material it's really a shame. Here DJ Shyboy gives it a shot including Lil Jon and Survivor's one-hit wonder track. It's not the best I've ever heard, but it's worth a listen.

http://www.bootiemashup.com/top10/07-2014/01%20Any%20Way%20You%20Gotta%20Feeling.mp3
Just in case you thought Journey mash-ups were a thing of the past, allow me to give you Voicedude's Journey three-way. MizA you might want to avoid this one.

https://soundcloud.com/tossesvarvez/1992-too-many-ts-tosses-varvez
Saving the best for last - and you know it wouldn't be a real drwex music post unless it contained at least some funk - here's Tosses & Varvez with a seriously bouncing ghettofunk track. It's fast-rapping, funky beats and seriously get up and dance already!
drwex: (pogo)
Meeting cancelled, can I sneak in a music post? With the business of work lately I haven't had time to listen to a lot of things, but still there are some tabs. Several of these tracks are

https://soundcloud.com/londongrammar/london-grammar-devil-inside-1
I'm hoping to see London Grammar this Friday and I'm stoked for the show, so let me share with you a cover they posted a few weeks ago of my favorite INXS tune, "Devil Inside". This is so different from the original it's startling. But beautiful. What made INXS work for me was Michael Hutchence's voice, and here Hannah Reid takes it on beautifully. The music is mostly transposed to piano, as you'd expect from London Grammar and if I have any quibble it's that they wait too late (3:30 or so) to bring in the full orchestration.

https://soundcloud.com/mashupgermany/mashup-germany-i-am-who-i-am
Another brilliant track from Mashup Germany. Seven tracks, largely built around Mark Morrison's "I am what I am". It's smooth and gentle, as befits the component tracks. He even manages to throw in some Ke$ha without it spoiling things.

https://soundcloud.com/djschmolli/upgrade-the-casbah
DJ Schmolli starts off with a fairly basic "Rock the Casbah" mix and then starts pulling in other things. Around 2:00 he grabs some Ofra Haza to float over the bongos, which works surprisingly well. Unfortunately it then swaps back to Beyonce, which doesn't do her much credit in the comparison.

https://soundcloud.com/scottscottscott/do-it-again
Scottscottscott pulls together five tracks in a mix that I kept thinking was going to go off the rails as a trainwreck but he manages it brilliantly. It's got good energy but never goes off into frenetic.

https://soundcloud.com/sebwax/indochinevsgossip
Sebwax - a French DJ I had not heard before - does something awesome here. He's taken Beth Ditto's vocals from "Perfect World" - which I really like - and laid them over a the instrumental track from French rockers Indochine's "College Boy" (I was going to link to the video, but it's pretty disturbing; find it if you must).

https://soundcloud.com/djmightymauz/dj-mighty-mauz-your-blessed
DJ Mighty Mauz turns in a fully respectable house dance mash-up, using one of the few Christina Aguilera tracks I like and the Avicii standard "Blessed". As with most of these mash-ups the question is "has the mix improved things?" and in this case I think the mix is an improvement on both the originals. This is my kind of "dance around the room when I need to get stuff done" music.

https://soundcloud.com/neash-sddbmusic/slynk-vs-soundboy-tom-vs
You call something "The Funk Mash-up" and you know I'm there. This is labeled "ghetto funk" which as far as I can tell involves mixing up classing funk tracks with some of the more contemporary rap/hip-hop tracks that were inspired by the original funk masters. This mix ends up being a little more disjointed than some of the smooth mixes I've linked to here, but it's a good effort using some of my favorite music.

https://soundcloud.com/thomasjackmusic/israel-kamakawiwoole-1
I mentioned Thomas Jack a few months ago - back then for a beautiful symphonic house track. Here he's got a huge winner of a remix. The original is Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's famous ukelele rendition of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World". This track has been used in at least half a dozen movies and it's hard to see how it could be improved on. What Jack does is something he calls "Tropical House" and that's just the right fit. It keeps Iz's gentle vocals and uke work but gives it an up-tempo feel and house touches. Gorgeous.
drwex: (pogo)
I keep thinking I can do this post, what with all the meeting cancellations, but stuff keeps getting in the way. Let's see if I can close this out as the week ends. I've been a bit stressed out of late so this is mostly gentle relaxing stuff. Not ear-filler, but engaging soothing sounds.

https://soundcloud.com/nickraymondg/thomas-jack-symphony-original
Thomas Jack (http://thomasjackmusic.com/) is a new name to me. He's a young new DJ out of Australia who seems to specialize in deeper house/electronics. This track, however, caught my ear because of the way it uses traditional instruments. The piano/horn segment from about 2:00 to 2:20 is just beautiful and the entire track has symphonic sweep and bright touches. Yes, that's a house beat but I don't think this is like any house you've heard before.

https://soundcloud.com/nickraymondg/felix-cartal-feat-ofelia-new
CRNKN (https://soundcloud.com/crnkn) sounds like someone who should be producing hard-hitting floor clearers, but this is a vocal-driven, low BPM, electro-house track. The original is Ofelia (https://www.facebook.com/ofeliasings) a classically trained vocalist singing for Felix Cartal (http://www.felixcartal.com/) on a track called "New Scene". The track is off Cartal's latest EP, which I intend to grab and may blog again.

https://soundcloud.com/nickraymondg/cash-cash-take-me-home-ft-bebe
Another three-parter that mixes two distinct styles. From the top: it's Bebe Rexha (http://www.beberexha.com/#!) a New York-based singer/songwriter fronting for Cash Cash (http://www.cashcashmusic.com/) on a track called "Take Me Home". The original (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDo2SiW3JHU) is a kick-drum heavy track that pushes Rexha's vocals up and into dance space. The Flaxo (https://www.facebook.com/Flaxomusic) remix here is much more chill and stylistically varied, ranging from near vocal trance to prog to moombahton.

https://soundcloud.com/rac/imagine-dragons-on-top-of-the-world-rac-mix
RAC turns in another fine remix. This time he's working with Imagine Dragons' "On Top of the World". The original (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8PrTzLaLHc) is a pleasant hand-clapping dance rock track with afro-carib influences that came out last year. RAC builds up a lusher and more layered sound than the original, while still keeping its bouncy spirit intact.

https://soundcloud.com/nickraymondg/sub-focus-turn-back-time
With any luck the previous four tracks have you relaxed and feeling like you can let go, in which case you want to listen to this one. It's Steerner remixing Sub Focus's "Turn Back Time." The original (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWRJbHmvtIU) just came out in September and it starts out as a nice vocal house banger but drifts into annoying bloopy electronica. Steener strips out the most annoying bits and amps up the electro-house banger bits. A definite improvement on the original.

https://soundcloud.com/divideandkreate/get-lucky-divide-kreate-remix
This track has been making me crazy with that "I know this..." feeling. Divide and Kreate (http://divideandkreate.com/) is at it again, remixing favorites. This is his bootleg remix of the popular Daft Punk "Get Lucky". It's a good mix. What's making me crazy is the opener - the first 25 or so seconds where D&K has put the string bits. In the track comments I asked him about it and he said he played it from the vocal track. Which is fine, but that just tells me Daft Punk lifted this from something else. But frelled if I can figure out what.

https://soundcloud.com/nickraymondg/ghostbusters-kill-paris-remix
And finally, a remix to get you grinning. Kill Paris (https://soundcloud.com/killparis) takes on the thematic track from the Ghostbusters movies, giving it what he calls a "future funk" sound. That's not a bad descriptor for something that has heavy fuzz electronica but the fundamental timings of funk. It's a loving and danceable cover of the original.
