Two weeks since I did a music post and I've got a weird assortment of stuff. I'll try to cohere it a little but this is likely another one of those "something to appeal to everyone" situations.

In this post I give you some long-form listens. I have a hard time putting these into the regular music posts because they tend to unbalance things. Click these links when you have the time to enjoy, or when you need a soundtrack to move you.

DJ Steveboy put together a delicious collection of deep house/electro house tracks. It's fast and energetic and it mostly avoids the dull repetitive bits that electro-house can devolve into. I was listening along and suddenly went, "Wait, I know that sound." A little research and it turns out I remember Moguai from a couple years ago. The track is called "Monkey Business" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMikf0KNMkw) a track I used to put on when I had to power through something boring. I find it impossible to be bored while this is playing.

Raggabreaks is 35+ minutes of funky, reggae-inspired hip-hop. It's got scratch, rhyming, and as advertised it's all done in a ghettofunk style. That means it's a little more sped up compared to your traditional reggae/ragga rhythms but it also means you get more funky horns and uptempo jazzy pianohall bits thrown in. I think the combination works well. Unfortunately there's no tracklist so I can't name/link my favorite.

If I have to explain DJs from Mars to you at this point I suggest you start with my previous references to them. This "Alien Selection" is a collection of a couple of the DJ's own works and a lot of awesome mashing goodness from other names. As with any selection, there are going to be things that appeal more to one listener than another (I can't stand Katy Perry, even heavily mashed). The overall style fits with the DJs usual "fun party" approach.

(I think the next post is going to be delayed while I re-listen to this set again.)

Other things have consumed so many cycles I haven't had time to post music lately but I've got open tabs like whoa. This set of links will help you relax, cheer you up, or get you moving as you wish.

First, if you also need some relaxation from the stress and angst of the days, just play this. This is Thomas Jack's "Tropical House" album and it's 90+ minutes of lovely, relaxing, jazzy, beach-inspired music. I've played this through four times since I found it a couple months ago and I'm still having a hard time picking out favorites - it's just uniformly good. There are a couple dozen artists throwing in here, and lots of them are original mixes, meaning if you like a track you can search for edits and remixes of that one, too.

https://soundcloud.com/beat-magnate/girls-just-wanna-dance
Beat Magnate brings an extended dance mix "for the ladies" by which I think he means that the track features a mix of dance hits and dance beats by female vocalists and female artists. There's no source listing, so some of the fun is in picking out who the samples are from. Well, Cindy Lauper isn't much of a challenge, but others are less obvious.

I haven't liked many Lana Del Rey mash-ups, but this one manages to pull in both Queen and Rammstein and yet somehow not create a trainwreck. I think what makes it work is that most of the samples are acapella. Props to DJ Energy (http://www.last.fm/music/Dj+Energy) for that. The result is slower and much more beautiful than you'd expect.

OK, enough with the quiet and mellow stuff. How about a high-energy dance stomper? This one is courtesy of DJ BrEd. It's built around four tracks that I'm not familiar with and sadly there's not a source list so I can't easily trace them. So just enjoy the result and if you're like me, get up and dance a bit.

https://soundcloud.com/philretrospector/moments-in-snoop
This one actually made me laugh out loud. It's a Phil RetroSpector old-style mix, using samples, Snoop bits, and Art of Noise's "Moments in Love". That latter is one of my favorite tracks and it's not something I'd heard mixed much. This isn't the most sophisticated mix and if you don't like Snoop you probably won't like this. But I needed some laughs this week and this is hilarious to me.

Public Enemy are also among those I feel don't get enough remixes and mashes. They have such great source material it's really a shame. Here DJ Shyboy gives it a shot including Lil Jon and Survivor's one-hit wonder track. It's not the best I've ever heard, but it's worth a listen.

Just in case you thought Journey mash-ups were a thing of the past, allow me to give you Voicedude's Journey three-way. MizA you might want to avoid this one.

Saving the best for last - and you know it wouldn't be a real drwex music post unless it contained at least some funk - here's Tosses & Varvez with a seriously bouncing ghettofunk track. It's fast-rapping, funky beats and seriously get up and dance already!

Several good things came across Mashup Radio this week and I've got a couple other fun tracks to share.

https://soundcloud.com/timewarp-music/funky-destination-down-to-the-music-tosses-varvez-remix
Tosses and Varvez give us a nu-funk remix of "Down to the Music." The original is a nice standard funk track. This is funk raised to the power of funk, with some breakbeats and electro-fuzz thrown in for good measure. The track is off their new Funky Destination CD, all of which sounds excellent.

https://soundcloud.com/tossesvarvez/tosses-varvez-trick-yo-self
The previous track sent me cruising through other things Tosses & Varvez did in the past. This is from March of last year and it's another great funky, scratchy, breakbeat-filled track. I particularly love the synth parts around 1:20 which sound to me like a deliberate nod to Daft Punk. Or maybe just an outright steal.

https://soundcloud.com/mixesandmashups/snow-informer-90s-hiphop
I don't remember how I found this one - it's several months ago, but I just came across it. It's Snow's 1992 hit "Informer" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StlMdNcvCJo), which is notably the first time I ever saw a Canadian white boy doing respectable reggae. Here Yanivi (http://www.yanivi.com/) puts an electro-dub spin on the track, and does a respectable job of carrying both styles.

https://soundcloud.com/mixesandmashups/led-zeppelin-vs-rolling
DJ Schmolli gives us a high-speed run through much of his core source material, from AC/DC and Black Sabbath to Joan Jett and Run DMC. I have the feeling I've heard this before, but it might just be because I'm used to Schmolli mashing these source tracks against all kinds of modern pop.

https://soundcloud.com/cphome/where-have-you-been-gatzilla-trance-mashup
What this is, I don't even know. It's a trance mashup by a duo calling themselves Gatzilla (https://www.facebook.com/therealgatzilla). The base tracks are ones I like (though I think Rihanna is way overtuned on "Where Have You Been") and the idea of mashing things in a trance style is new enough to be interesting in its own right. It's high-BPM, high energy, and fun to dance to.

https://soundcloud.com/discosids-mashups-and-mixes/major-lazer-pharrell-vs-bingo
Major Lazer can be very much a "take it or leave it" experience. Here Discosid mashes Lazer with Bingo Players, which I'd not heard before. I love the fast vocals and the overall bouncy feel of the track - it's the sort of thing I'd play if I wanted to motivate myself to get things done.
